Youth Found Dead Following Untrue Allegations of Taking Ashes
A teenage boy was discovered deceased just days following being wrongly accused of stealing the cremated remains of a deceased baby during a break-in, an inquest has learned.
Tragic Discovery
The young boy's parents discovered his remains in his room at his Connah's Quay residence on November 19th, 2021.
Untrue Accusations Begin
The inquest learned how his parent received a communication on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a individual asking if Kai was her child. The message stated: "Inform him appreciation for burgling my apartment."
In a statement read to the proceedings, the mother said the woman had been in the news, claiming her infant's remains had been taken in a burglary - a allegation which was untrue.
Law Enforcement Investigation
An investigation report from authorities later determined the supposed break-in victim had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that said property was never taken in the beginning".
Media reports about the supposed taken ashes attracted social media comments, and although Kai was not identified in the messages, his parent said individuals "understood it was him".
The "social media content were extremely upsetting", she stated.
Emotional Health Impact
She explained that Kai had been diagnosed with mild ADHD, and as part of that condition, other individuals' views really were important to him.
"It would have hurt him deeply," she said, "especially when this was untrue".
The teenager was detained at home, but nothing was discovered. He was taken to a law enforcement facility and later freed pending further inquiry.
Authorities said they would be in touch, the hearing heard, but had failed to contacted the family by the time of his passing.
Withdrawal and Anxiety
His parent said Kai "became isolated" after the detention and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had heard anything from the police", because his condition meant sometimes "a minute could seem like days".
When she spoke to him about the supposed incident, she said her son informed her he had entered the residence because the woman who lived there had said he could utilize the toilet whenever he wanted, but refuted taking anything.
Digital Harassment
In a combined testimony between her and her husband, Mrs Lloyd said her child was being bullied online after the accusations.
The proceedings heard that one young adult encouraged the teenager to kill himself.
She had no concerns on the evening before he passed away, explaining how she had listened to him "laughing and teasing".
She described him as a "compassionate, loving" boy, and said her "relatives is completely devastated".
He had been "obviously concealing his concerns", she stated, adding that he could not stand to have anyone "think bad of him".
School Response
The inquest heard from educational personnel at the local High School.
On November 8th, she "overheard some students talking that Kai had been arrested and that was the first I heard".
"He informed me... he'd was innocent," she continued.
After the conversation, the staff member said she called the family's family telephone and left a voicemail saying she had spoken to Kai about the accusations.
The court learned his family said they did not receive that message.
Official Finding
Senior coroner informed the hearing he would await reports regarding what improvements had been made to handling individuals with ADHD, before determining whether he should make a prevention of future deaths report.
Providing a descriptive finding, he stated: "Approximately November 8th, 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a young individual.
"Likely falsehoods were afterwards exaggerated and exaggerated through the platform of social media.
"On November 11th, he was questioned by the authorities and following his questioning he was freed while inquiries continued."
The coroner concluded: "Exists no evidence that the acts or failures of any agency led to or added to his death and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted action it is impossible to determine his purpose."
