Tuchel Desires Jude Bellingham's Passion Provided The Three Lions' Star Sets Aside His Ego Outside.

A single omission did the trick. Another and it would have started to look spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, who is much too clever not to know that claiming the World Cup trophy is probably going to require contributions by the talented midfielder, although it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to adapt to the game plans and team pecking order required with England now that he is returned to the manager's welcoming fold.

The manager seeks his aggressive mentality, his intensity, but it is about using it appropriately. Personal talent counts but England understand from past setbacks that there is a cost when stardom dominates. Still, a message has been sent.

The midfielder was given food for thought after being left out of the previous squad. He observed England secure their spot at next summer’s World Cup without him. He saw Morgan Rogers shine as a high-pressing attacking midfielder. He listened as Tuchel mention valuing the group’s energy and ethics. Inevitably, he has reacted in champion style, scoring crucial goals for his club versus their rivals and the Italian side. His selection was inevitable; another omission would have put his tournament chances precarious.

The hope is that Tuchel will have a Bellingham focused on pressuring the opposition instead of teammates. After all, in purely sporting terms, there is little benefit to picking a fight with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period on the sidelines has demonstrated that playing for one's country is a precious, precarious thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now throw a protective shield for the youngster after proving that he is not afraid to drop big names.

“There is no problem with him, and no concern with the character,” Tuchel said. “Bellingham displays that aggression. It takes a certain edge to succeed at the top that he reached. We all need to support him and create an environment which he can use that intensity in matches and for the objectives we are working towards as a team.”

Bellingham took up much of the focus at the team news conference for this month’s meaningless matches versus one opponent and the other. Any other news? Indeed, how about Phil Foden? This is a further gifted No 10 requiring coaching. He has been absent for England since spring and has found it hard to hit the heights this year but Tuchel could not ignore the player after his display in his club's victory against Borussia Dortmund recently.

The question, however, is how to use the attacking talents at England’s disposal. Rogers and Eze have earned their places and there will be compelling reasons to include Cole Palmer once he is fit after a fitness issue. Is selecting five No 10s to the World Cup be an overkill? The previous manager failed to discover the correct balance at the European Championship. He compromised by squeezing both stars into the starting lineup, cramping Harry Kane’s game as a result.

It seems unlikely Tuchel making the same mistake if it hurts the team harmony. Space exists for a single playmaker, with speedy wingers on the flanks. Clarity is beneficial. Bellingham is selected as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first time, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will battle another player as a defensive midfielder. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for the City star, who must play central. The coach prefers him close to Kane. “It is illogical to ask Phil: ‘You are needed in the team but there’s no space in your preferred role, can you play left wing? Can you play right wing?” he stated. “Phil is to feature in the central attacking zone, through the center. I have this fantasy about him for a long time. In my view it matches his abilities the most.”

Tuchel agreed there are times when the player has not looked himself in an national jersey. “One senses almost like, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And a player like him who has obvious passion for the game, then clearly an issue exists, whether it's the position, the environment, it's unclear.

“I think he is additionally so used to representing his club in a particular setup, with a clear task. Believe he profits greatly from clarity. Where do you want me to be? In which positions am I to receive the ball? When should I to accelerate the match? What are my to defensive duties?”

Tuchel talked about Bellingham bursting through for tap-ins and the other drilling in goals from outside the box. He said he has a longlist of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. A new face is rewarded for his excellent performances for Manchester City at left-back. Intrigue is high.

Leaving out of the striker means there is no direct replacement for Kane in this squad. Fascinatingly, Tuchel suggested deploying Foden as a deep-lying striker against one opponent or the other. Anthony Gordon, Marcus Rashford, the midfielder and the winger are alternatives if he be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for a little experimentation.

At the same time, it is also a moment to foster Kane’s relationship with his teammate flowing. It is remarkable that one must look back to the latter setting up Kane to net in a friendly win versus Scotland in over a year ago to discover the one and only time in 35 games for England when the duo combined for a goal. The coach will know that Kane and Bellingham only passed to each other a single time during England’s draws with Denmark and another at the European Championship. The connection is missing.

“At this point at some point it falls to the responsibility of the individuals,” he stated. He is not afraid to deliver home truths. Remains a sense of the player being on trial. He cannot even be assured to begin against Serbia and Albania. Tuchel wants him committed but he will be monitoring him closely. Leave self-importance outside. Doing so could turn a powerful squad into an superior one.
