The Year 2026 Declared the Age of the Amphibian Adventure.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am certain that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Given that a band of frogs is known as an army, it seems they are staking their claim.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Croaking characters are far from new to the interactive entertainment. From the arcade classic Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a cult following. However, their prevalence has seemingly exploded in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are legitimate amphibian adventures.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To quantify this rise, I conducted a detailed review into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The findings tell a compelling story: a marked increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's growing prominence in the public consciousness is also evident elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. But, the wave in gaming appears particularly pronounced.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

In my opinion, this is a movement I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess inherent design advantages for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as endearing characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues lend themselves to a wide array of innovative control schemes.

A number of the featured titles directly leverage these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming.

Should these games perform well—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we might just be witnessing a true amphibian entertainment revival.
