Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her annual festive musical service at the iconic London venue, with a congregation comprising dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have helped their communities.

The large audience will hear a blend of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from performers including award-winning actors.

Centred Around Kindness and Compassion

The focus of the concert, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

Among the guests will be Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose daughter died of a tumour, and who established a foundation, a support fund, to help households where there is a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often discreetly and without words, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an profound impact to the lives of others," Her Royal Highness stated in a letter ahead of the carol service.

A Steady Comeback

The royal has been undertaking her own steady comeback to public life following her health challenges and treatment, last month delivering her initial major address in two years, in which she talked about recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".

Music and Opportunity

Attendees entering the Abbey will enjoy performances from young musicians supported by the Future Talent charity, co-founded by the late Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for musical tuition.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who is a trumpet player and is from Wales, has been supported by the charity, with funding assisting with equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "amazing" to be playing at the evening's event.

"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," Carys said. She is now a student at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to hone their artistic talents.

Generations Gathering

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who is a euphonium player, will likewise attend the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many notable figures," she said.

Attending the service will be representatives of different generations.

That will feature young Saphia Turner, nine, recipient of a prize for youthful altruism, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to raise money for food banks.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been adorned with custom-created holiday decorations, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

Among the musical performers will be recording artist Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a Cornish sea shanty group, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the icing on the cake for us."

This annual carol service will be televised and shown on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
