Peru to Declare National Emergency Following Deadly Protests Targeting New President
The nation will soon declare a state of emergency after at least one person was killed and numerous law enforcement personnel sustained injuries in massive demonstrations targeting the newly installed president, inaugurated only a few days prior.
Government Response
The nation's premier announced Thursday evening that the government would declare emergency protocols for the capital within hours and is preparing a package of measures to address escalating safety concerns.
The protest on Wednesday night â called by gen Z protesters, transport workers and civil groups â was the latest in a series of demonstrations targeting graft and increasing lawlessness, culminating in the sudden removal of the previous administration.
Demonstration Developments
Mass gatherings formed nationwide, with hundreds clashing with police outside congress in Lima. Law enforcement deployed crowd control measures while some protesters hurled fireworks, rocks and burning objects.
"All must leave!" demonstrators shouted upon arriving at the legislature and tried to tear down metal barriers surrounding the structure.
Victims and Inquiry
A 32-year-old man, Eduardo Mauricio Ruiz, was killed during the protest and authorities pledged to examine the circumstances, stated a human rights representative, from the national oversight institution. Peru's prosecutor's office confirmed the victim sustained fatal gunshot wounds.

The president conveyed sorrow regarding the fatality through social media channels, saying the death would be "objectively" investigated. He blamed violence on "delinquents who infiltrated a peaceful demonstration to sow chaos".
"The full force of the law will be on them," he said.
Following legislative discussions regarding the demonstrations, JerĂ said he would ask congress for "authority to legislate on public safety issues".

JerĂ said one focus would be prison reform, but did not elaborate on what those powers would entail.
Recently installed security chief Vicente Tiburcio informed legislators that the government would push for comprehensive reform to the national police, adding that 89 police and 22 civilians had been injured during the protest and multiple individuals faced arrest.
