Delhi Awakens to Hazardous Smog Post Diwali
As Tuesday dawned residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with breathing dangerously toxic air that fell into the "critical" level.
Record-Breaking Air Quality Readings
Several parts of the city showed an air quality index exceeding 500, which equals 10x the healthy level set by the World Health Organization.
In some locations, readings of toxic particulate matter hit highs of 1,800, equating to fifteen to twenty times higher than safe standards.
Fireworks Restrictions and Recent Policy Shifts
For the past four years, the government had maintained a complete ban on the sale and use of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the hazardous smog that blankets the city as colder weather begins.
However recently, the recently formed local government appealed to the highest court to request a easing of the prohibition.
Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – which have been questioned by environmentalists as being only about 30% lower impact – as a balance between "tradition and ecological concerns".
Court Verdict and Reality
To the disappointment of environmental and health activists, judges complied with the proposal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during designated hours throughout the celebrations.
During the celebrations, there was extensive disregard of the regulated periods across the capital, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener type.
Numerous air quality sensors throughout Delhi recorded contamination reaching highest levels around late evening to the most severe readings seen during the festival in at least recent memory.
Cross-Border Implications
The widespread use of fireworks during the festival also initiated a dispute with adjacent Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistani Punjab partially attributing declining pollution levels in Lahore on pollutants originating in across the border following the events.
Persistent Pollution Issue
Alarmingly severe readings of atmospheric toxins in the city have continued as a significant problem for over a decade and a half, with the situation continuing to worsen.
During Diwali, the concentration of toxic particulate matter in the atmosphere has been found to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the peak records ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was previously considered as the world's most polluted metropolis.
Various Contamination Contributors
This crisis in the capital is attributed to a mix of different contributors including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, construction activities, garbage fires and smoke from farm burning in adjacent areas of farming communities.
In these regions, rural residents regularly set their fields on fire to prepare for next season, producing toxic pollution that then gets trapped over the metropolitan area as cooler air sets in.
Public Health and Financial Consequences
Both financial and medical impact on the approximately 33 million people residing in the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to numerous studies.
These hazardous conditions causes elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and respiratory conditions, and can even lead to malignancies.
The pollution is projected to be causing 10,000 untimely deaths annually in the city.
