Debunking Venezuela Celebration Videos and AI-Generated Pictures of Maduro.
Computer-created graphics purporting to show Nicolás Maduro detained after his capture by the American authorities have amassed tens of millions of impressions across the internet.
The Way AI Images of Maduro Appeared Rapidly
Initial fake AI image apparently showing him taken off a aircraft surfaced shortly after. This image was not shared any official US channels; it was instead published on the platform X by an account purporting to be an “AI video art enthusiast”.
We’ve checked the SynthID tool, determining the picture was generated or edited with Google AI.
Further AI-generated images began to spread in the ensuing hours, purporting to present additional perspectives of the leader detained. Visible logos on these images show they were posted by an Instagram profile called ultravfx.
The detection tool indicates all of these pictures were likewise generated or edited Google AI.
Authentic Image Released but Fabrications Persisted
The former US president released the first real photo of Maduro restrained aboard the US Navy ship on Saturday morning. Yet following the authentic image was made public, synthetic images persisted online but were modified to incorporate the grey tracksuit worn by Maduro.
Digital forensics show these altered fabrications were first posted on TikTok by a digital art account. Similarly, analysis says the new graphics were created or altered Google AI.
